WTI (West Texas Intermediate) is the leading United States oil benchmark, priced at the Cushing, Oklahoma delivery hub and traded on NYMEX. It is a light, sweet crude grade used as the marginal price for US refiners and as the reference for North American crude oil contracts. WTI is one of the two most important global oil benchmarks alongside Brent.
WTI prices directly affect US inflation, gasoline and diesel pump prices, jet-fuel costs, freight and logistics rates, and the broader global economy. A sustained move in WTI feeds through into consumer prices within weeks and reshapes corporate margins across every fuel-intensive industry.
WTI is driven by OPEC+ production decisions, weekly US EIA inventory data, geopolitical risk (Middle East, Russia, sanctions, Red Sea shipping), Chinese industrial demand, US dollar strength, macro volatility (VIX), and gas-to-oil switching dynamics. EnergyRiskIQ’s GERI index captures the geopolitical layer in real time.
